Be it the tried and true space filler or the baiter of all fanboy flame wars, “Top 10” lists seem to be a required part of the gaming enthusiast press. For all the fluff, repeated entries, and possible anger to come from them we as fans continue to read any list that comes our way. Perhaps in the same way that they are easy to compose, they are also easy to digest.
So before I run you off with excess how about we dive right into this list of the most common Top 10 lists that you have grown to expect and still continue to read.


10 Scariest Game of All Time

Scariest Game is the October standard with all the standard games you would expect. Hey did you know that Resident Evil and Silent Hill are great horror games? REALLY!!! Sometimes for the funny these list will include That's So Raven or some other generic Disney based property. I am a huge fan of Silent Hill so I do continue to read these lists. EXAMPLE

These really became popular over the last year and have been popping up more and more. Why though do they feel the need to KEEP showing me the box to Phalanx (I get that an old man with a banjo has nothing to do with a shmup) and MegaMan (Yes this is a schizophrenic piece of garbage with a scoliosis sufferer wielding a dollar store water gun) . I get that these are prime crap, but I think with a little digging more awesomely bad covers could be excavated. EXAMPLE

8 Best Fighting Game

This is the first list in our list that really can bait the fanboys. OF COURSE we all know that Street Fighter is the greatest fighting game ever and that most 3D fighters are a joke. Even though for some reason people feel the need to forever defend Virtua Fighter. Why they are trying to move the holy series that Street Fighter is into the dumpster of 3D forgotteness with their latest attempt at a Street Fighter 4......Alpha 3 forever baby YEAH! EXAMPLE

 

 

7 Best First Person Shooter

If you did not know that Doom was ground breaking, or that Half-Life redefined the genre they will let you know in this list. Counter Strike players will always be upset that their poison of choice will never make number one, but that is okay because they only count as half a person on the national census and are not eligible for anything. The rest of us I do not think are concerned, Console sites will choose Halo and PC will choose some ID product. One last note, you only like Golden Eye due to nostalgia, please get over it. EXAMPLE

Normal lists will give you the usual bit with Capcom, Konami, and Nintendo. Sometimes they will attempt to bust some hardcore street cred by throwing down names like Clover or Grasshopper. Really so many people go into making a game that anyway of recognizing them is nice. Fanboy flames aside this can be one of the better lists for educating people. EXAMPLE

4 Hottest Video Game Character

All males enjoy free T&A any that say otherwise are trying to sell you something. This list is not so much read as ogled. With this list it is important to have good photos with words simply making the spacing in between. Now, with women finding their way out of the kitchen and into electronic stores they to are making hottest guy character lists. Why are almost half of them from Final Fantasy? Women like the gays. 3 Best Console of All Time

For some reason this seems to affect fans of the Dreamcast more than anyone else. I think it should always be the SNES for the win, but most people also cannot deny the PlayStation 2. One thing for sure is we will never have to fear the Atari Jaguar seeing any spot on this list. And in closing the Dreamcast controller is ass, that is all. EXAMPLE

Forums exploding, cats and dogs sleeping together, total anarchy. That is what ensues when you release the best game ever list. At least until the next list and the fighting can continue to take a new angle. No one can pick the greatest anything of all time. Usually this list is uses greatest to mean most influential as a way of legitimizing what is basically the most opinionated of critical choices. IGN tried to soften the blow by making the list 100 so that no one is left out. EXAMPLE
