Epic Fail 5: LF2M Heroic Fail
Posted on: 12/15/2008 - By: Chris

After spending well over an hour sitting in the "Looking For Group" channel, imagine my surprise when I get a whisper from a Warrior asking that I join his group. All he needed was DPS. Without any hesitation, I replied that I wanted to join his group. Invite window comes up, and I of course hit accept. I am now in a group with 3 others. I quickly ask what we need to fill the group out. I receive a reply that we need one more DPS before we can start our heroic instance. Our Shaman speaks out that even though he is healing, he would like to get the epic mace off of the last boss, if it drops of course. He informs the group that he is working towards an enhancement set. We all agree that no one had any problems with it. We then grab the last member of our group, a Rogue. Words are exchanged, and all is well. Then, without warning, the Shaman that we spoke of earlier states that he will not group with us if there is a Rogue in the party. The Rogue asked if there is something that he has done that has made the Shaman angry, when suddenly the Shaman leaves the party. I send a whisper to the Shaman asking him if the reason why he left was because he was afraid that the Rogue would roll on the mace. The Shaman confirmed that this was the case. I explained to the group what the Shaman had said, to which the Rogue replied in party chat that he already had the mace!

So what we can learn from this is pretty clear. If you are trying to obtain a specific item in a dungeon run, it’s always a good idea to see what the intentions are of others who can use that specific item. Still, you should avoid making yourself look like an idiot. Not only did that Shaman not get to run a heroic dungeon with a perfectly fine group, but he missed out on the mace when it dropped. Now whenever anyone from that group sees the shaman out and about, they will remember how much of a fool he was. This may never affect the Shaman, but then again, it could prevent him from getting into groups because he is a selfish player.

The key thing to remember is that if you are in a certain role, as in this case the shaman being the healer, items that drop for your off spec are just that. You aren’t entitled to off-spec loot if others can use it for their main spec. Just like in all dealings in life, don’t be greedy. Take the time to explain what you are after, and you may actually get it. Being an asshole in a game is just like being one in real life. It will get you nowhere, you will look like a fool, and one day someone is going to put you in your place.
